There is not just one reason why Malayalam text breaks on digital devices. In reality, there are four distinct rendering failures that look similar at first glance, but each requires a different technical solution.
Problem 1: Little Empty Boxes / Tofu (□□□)
When you see hollow squares or rectangle boxes (called "Tofu"), your system or browser received authentic Unicode Malayalam characters, but has no font file installed that contains the Malayalam glyph range (U+0D00 to U+0D7F).
Install a modern Unicode Malayalam font such as Meera, Gayathri, or Noto Sans Malayalam on your operating system. Once installed, refresh your browser or restart your design application.
Problem 2: Question Marks (???) or Diamonds ()
Seeing question marks (???) or black diamonds with question marks () indicates a database or web server character encoding mismatch. This occurs when text originally encoded in UTF-8 is decoded as ISO-8859-1 or Windows-1252.
If you are viewing a webpage or document, set the document encoding to UTF-8. In HTML, include <meta charset="UTF-8"> in the <head> section. In Microsoft Word or Notepad, save the file with UTF-8 encoding.
Problem 3: Random English Letters (e.g. "\akvImcw" or "aebmfw")
If you paste text from a Kerala newspaper, PDF, or DTP file and see strange English strings like \akvImcw, aebmfw, or tIcfw, you are dealing with legacy ML-TT (ASCII) encoded text (such as Karthika or Revathi).
This text is not broken it simply needs to be translated into modern Unicode so it displays as നമസ്കാരം, മലയാളം, and കേരളം on WhatsApp, Instagram, and web browsers.
Use our free online 2-way ML-TT converter. Simply paste your legacy ASCII text, and it instantly converts it to proper Malayalam Unicode.
Open ML-TT Converter →Problem 4: Broken Vowels or Disconnected Letters (ക ് യ)
In Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, or CorelDRAW, Malayalam conjuncts may sometimes appear split into isolated characters (for example, showing ക്യ as ക ് യ). This happens when the graphics software has its complex text engine disabled.
- Open Photoshop and navigate to Edit → Preferences → Type.
- Under Choose Text Engine Options, select World-Ready Layout (or Middle Eastern and South Asian).
- Click OK and restart Photoshop.
- Now retype or paste your Malayalam text all conjuncts and matras will render with 100% correct typography.
Create beautiful Malayalam text ready for WhatsApp, Instagram, and graphic design tools.
